How long have you been roasting coffee?
Our Genio roaster arrived in Bloemfontein end of March 2016 and our first roast was on 1 April 2016 at our home in an outside room. So this year marks 10 years in the coffee roasting trade and almost 9 years at our Roastery & Café, The Towers Centre in Langenhovenpark.
Where did your coffee roasting career start?
My coffee roasting journey began after years of exploring global coffee cultures—from the USA’s filter coffee to Egypt’s strong Turkish brews, Europe’s rich espressos, and Africa’s aromatic beans. After a trip to Germany in 2015, I decided to start roasting my own beans. This passion led to the founding of Bloemfontein Coffee Roasting Co. in 2016, bringing top-quality coffee to our hometown.
What do you love most about roasting?
I love all the different coffees we get to work with and the challenges that they present.
Every bean / origin is different, and we as roasters need to change our approach. Processing methods, moisture content, and the density of the beans all play a role
What is your favourite coffee to drink right now?
My go-to coffee is a flat white. (Made in a small cup served with a double ristreto as it should be.)
What is your favourite origin bean to roast?
All of them!!!
Most memorable will always be the Ethiopia Guji Natural, which was my first encounter with natural processed coffees.
2nd place would be Colombia, which is always consistent.
